Earthquake, What Earthquake?

What no story on Willie Mason?

What no story on Willie Mason?

Let’s face it the Daily Telegraph is a true reflection of Australian society’s current condition. We have become a self absorbed nation focussed on wealth, celebrity and sport.

Sure we want to know about natural disasters, but let’s face it we just want to know the numbers, the magnitude of the earthquake, the size of the tsunami and the number killed, that’s about all we need, maybe of few pictures of someone on their knees weeping or someone carrying a dead baby.

There will be a collections taken up in offices around Australia over the coming days with that money being passed onto the Red Cross and we will all go home and feel good about ourselves. From then on we won’t want to be reminded of the trauma and pain being faced by the survivors of the earthquake in Haiti.

As the death toll in Haiti rises and governments rush to fill military aircraft with vital medical supplies, medical teams and rescue personnel the Daily Telegraph has already moved onto more important issues such as the Free to Air coverage given to the Sydney Roosters at the start of the 2010 NRL season.

In the online edition of the Daily Telegraph the article on the “Clubs fume at spoon-fed Roosters” came in at number 4, with the lead being a story on the security arrangements for Price William during his upcoming visit to Australia.

No one should blame the Editors from the Daily Telegraph for their focus on football and celebrity, it’s what their readers want.

In a few hours the NRL article received over 200 hundred readers comments. None of the comments attributed to the article cried out in indignation on the poor coverage given to the crisis in Haiti, on the contrary they are full of passion, either in support or condemnation of the coverage given to the Roosters as with the below comment from Sea Eagle Nation:

I am tired of always hearing Souths board and their fans always complaining. It never ends. Richardson always crying about something. Dam, whats wrong with souths, you have the most titles, you took some roosters territory in the 50’s, you have the most memberships, you have a hollywood star and one of Australias richest men, and have most probably the most interesting history. You have nothing to complain about, but will always winge about something. Always fixated with the roosters. Give it a break Souths. Eels or dogs have reason to complain, at least they made top 8. The roosters still have many fans in powerful positions just like Souths do and just like my Eagles do. That is their good luck, and advantage, hell, we all know they need it. Instead of kicking em while their down, being a good Australian is about giving them a go, doesn’t matter which team. Remember there were many Eagles, roosters and other teams fans marching for you back in 2000. Eagles 2010

The Daily Telegraphs story on the Earthquake in Haiti came in at number 6 and didn’t focus on the trivial matters such as the desperate conditions Haiti’s now found themselves in and the risks they now faced by an outbreak of disease, or frantic rush to get medical supplies into Haiti or even the ever mounting death toll. No the Daily Telegraph want to get to the bigger issues such as how two-year-old Alyahana Sanson-Rejouis was pulled alive from the wreckage of her hotel room with just a broken leg.

The 3 comments attributed to the article on Haiti wont concern the editor of the Daily Telegraph, Gary Linell and his team as they know there are plenty more like Sea Eagles Nation than Steve R of Sydney, DV and The Bearoness of Kalgoorlie Goldfields:

There will be over 100,000 dead, this is all we can come up with is it??

How is this terrible disaster not the main headline? Shame on you DT. What a pathetic excuse for a newspaper!

This sad event is too huge to comprehend ,more important to bring us up-to-date news on this instead of criticising Catriona Rowntree’s dangerous buttons on babywear, isn’t it ?

I hate this side of our country, and am fckng sick of these inbred potato heads and their media whores. If the earthquake had happened in Los Angeles and Malibu mansions were floating in the Pacific The Daily Telegraph would give it wall-to-wall coverage.
